Boiler breakdowns split into roughly six categories: ignition failure (no spark, no flame), flow failure (pump, diverter valve, sticking valve), pressure loss (system leak, expansion vessel, PRV), control failure (PCB, sensors, fan), gas supply issue, and condensate freeze in winter. Each has a different fix and a different parts cost.
We diagnose by symptom first, fault code second. Fault codes tell you what the boiler thinks is wrong — not always what's actually wrong. A skilled engineer reads the code, then verifies physically before ordering parts.
Around 85% of repairs we attend are completed in the first visit, because the van carries the most-replaced parts as standard: diverter valves, PCBs for common Worcester / Vaillant / Ideal models, fans, ignition leads, expansion vessels, PRVs, gaskets and pumps. Specialist parts (e.g. a specific Vaillant flow turbine) sometimes need overnight delivery.

In detail
Common faults by brand — what we see most often in Northants
Worcester Greenstar boilers (the most common in our patch) usually fail at the diverter valve cartridge between years 5 and 9 — symptom is hot water working but central heating not, or vice versa. Quoted as a fixed-price repair, normally fixable same visit. PCB failures appear later, around year 10–12.
Vaillant ecoTec models we see most often for fan failures (rumbling on startup, eventual lockout) and condensate trap blockages in winter. Both are first-visit fixes. The flow turbine is the other recurring Vaillant fault — reads zero hot-water flow when the tap is open.
Ideal Logic boilers have a known weak spot at the printed circuit board around years 6–8 — we carry the replacement PCB for the Logic+, Logic Combi and Logic Heat. Baxi Duo-tec and Glow-worm Energy boilers most commonly fail at the diverter valve and the fan respectively.
